Distilled in 1974 and matured for 30 years in sherry (puncheon) cask No. 929038, this Fine & Rare Macallan was bottled in 2004 at 56.5% ABV as one of just 527 bottles. Natural cask strength, non‑chill filtered, and without added colouring. The spirit has aged to a rich rosewood colour, the deep influence of sherry wood clearly visible in both hue and character. On the nose, expect an enveloping mix of dark chocolate and candied oranges, overlaid with dried raisins, custard, sandalwood, clove and cinnamon. Hints of smoke and aged leather deepen the profile. The palate is luxurious: fruit compote (plum, blackcurrant) softened by citrus peel, intertwined with oak spices, vanilla, and a surprising touch of peat rounding out the mid‑palate. The finish is long and opulent—fruits and spices linger, with shades of leather, dark oak, and gentle drying tannin that invite slow sipping. For collectors, this bottle holds multiple strengths: its vintage pedigree, its scarce outturn, the prestige of the Fine & Rare series, and high potential value in auctions—especially if the bottle is in excellent condition. It is not only a dram for tasting but a liquid artifact.

    Macallan

Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, the Elchies Distillery as it was known initially, did not become the Macallan-Glenlivet in name until 1892. Since then, it has undergone massive expansion with Edrington and William Grant & Sons combining forces in 1999 to purchase Highland Distillers for £601 million. By then, the reputation of the distillery for its sherry-led style of whisky was already firmly in place. The new ownership model has enabled the distillery to produce new ranges, reach out to new demographics and establish itself as an international brand of quality. Bottles are Macallan are increasingly sought after for their commodity value and not the contents, which often are of high quality. Moving to a new distillery site in recent years, will in the long-term, allow Macallan to produce more and if needed, the old distillery sits idle despite being capable of producing 11 million litres before it closed in 2018.
