Game of Thrones fans who enjoy Whisky are in for an absolute treat here. Nine single malt whiskies from respected distilleries in Scotland, eight have been paired up with a Game of Thrones house in the HBO hit series before subsequent releases from Mortlach and Johnnie Walker followed.

As you’re reading this blog and are possibly a customer of Just Whisky Auctions, it’s a fair assumption that you’ve visited more than a few distilleries and taken their tour.

That being the case, your guide almost certainly paused to point out the malt mill. More often than not, it’s a Porteus mill, though you might see the occasional Boby and even the odd Buhler mill.

But if it’s painted in a distinctive, unshowy shade of dark red then what you looked at was a Porteus mill (we’ll come back to the Boby mills shortly).  They’re sturdy little things, standing four-square in the mill room, ready to receive another load of malt, quiet occupants of an unobtrusive corner of the distillery that just get on with their job in a modest and understated way.

If the guide didn’t pause and point it out, a Porteus mill would never shout or draw attention to itself, you feel; happy to do an honest day’s work and then await the next consignment of malt to be turned to grist.

At this point, your guide quite probably explained that the mill was quite old and that the Porteus firm had gone out of business, outlived by the durability and simple excellence of a product so good and so enduring that it broke the company.

So well made that they required relatively little maintenance and with little or no demand for new machines both Porteus and Boby closed down many years ago.  They were outlived by their equipment and undone by the slump in whisky production of the 1970s and 80s and the ruthless consolidation of the brewing industry, meaning fewer and fewer small independent breweries.  Sadly, quite a few mills will have been scrapped which, until recently, hasn’t been a problem.

But it’s worth taking a closer look at these tough and functional looking machines and, if you do, there’s a good chance you’ll see a modest plaque somewhere on the side carrying a telephone number and the name Ronnie Lee.

Some years ago I noticed this on Jura and then, shortly afterwards, at Tobermory distillery and then again at a number of Speyside distilleries. So I began asking various guides ‘Who is this Ronnie Lee?’  No one knew – but as soon as I asked some real production people (as opposed to the friendly guides who for the most part are essentially a PR front and equipped with a marketing script) the pieces of a fascinating story fell quickly into place.

Well it turns out that, in a world of tattooed, bearded Brand Ambassadors with their hipster tweed caps, and rock-star Distillery Managers who jet from whisky show to whisky show, Ronnie Lee is a quiet hero. Yet he doesn’t give master classes, doesn’t blog and he’s definitely not part of the fashionable crowd that increasingly follow whisky these days.  But he – together, these days with son Gareth - are the men who mends the mills.  And, if you think about it, without their expertise there would be no whisky.

Working from their modest base near Chepstow, they run Euro Mechanical Engineering working as freelance millwrights.  As such, they spend most of their working days life in maintaining, servicing and, on occasion, restoring Porteus and Boby mills for the brewing and distilling industry.

Their surroundings are as far removed from whisky’s new image of sophistication, glamour and luxury as you might conceivably imagine, yet they carry out vital work as one of an elite group of engineers who keep these vintage machines in working order. Unsung and unheralded, they are essential to the smooth and effective operation of much of the distilling industry, here and internationally.

In fact, they work for Diageo, Chivas Brothers, Glenmorangie, Highland Distillers and Ian MacLeod Distillers, as well as a number of independent breweries and distilleries as far flung as Sweden, Italy and even the USA. If you want a vintage malt mill, or need one restored, Ronnie Lee is the man you call.

And that brings us to a fascinating twist in the story.  Some years ago, Ronnie acquired all the plans for the Boby mill when that firm closed down. With access to that unique archive, it was Euro Mechanical Engineering’s proud boast that, in theory, they could build a brand new Boby-style mill from scratch based on the original blueprints but updated for greater efficiency and cleaner running.

But why would you, when the originals have a working life of a century or more? Well, basically, they are desperately hard to find and with new distilleries and small breweries being built at an unprecedented pace, there’s a need for equipment of established high quality with a proven heritage.  Even the shiniest of new state-of-the-art distilleries may be discreetly supplied by a 50 or 60 year old machine which, come to think of it, is something quite amazingly heart-warming. But there just aren’t enough to go around.

And so it has come to pass that a new Boby mill has indeed been built and is now heading off to its eventual home in a soon-to-be-opened whisky distillery (which is another story, which we’ll come to in a moment).

The mill, of 4-5 tons capacity, is the product of 12 month’s work by Ronnie and Gareth Lee. The original design has been improved, Gareth telling me that while the exterior closely resembles an old-style Boby, the gears have been done away with, the roller bearings switched to a spherical shape and a double-edged synchronized belt fitted. If, like me, that’s double Dutch to you, I’m assured it means cleaner running (no oil), greater energy efficiency and potentially faster running speeds if desired by the operator. Everything has been built from the ground up with a local foundry providing custom-made castings for the bearings, which were then hand finished by Gareth.

But who has commissioned this work and where is this marvel of skillfully modernized vintage engineering to be found? Let’s hear it for the new owners, the family-owned and independent Ian Macleod Distillers, well-known for their Glengoyne and Tamdhu single malts, the imaginative reopening of Rosebank and their Edinburgh Gin brand.  They are also partners in the proposed Laggan Bay project which, if everything goes to plan, will be Islay’s twelfth distillery.

So the Boby is destined for a Hebridean home? Well, no. In fact, it is travelling around 4,000 miles to Una, a town in the southwestern Himachal Pradesh state in northern India where Macleod Distillers are currently building on a greenfield site.  The distillery, expected to be operational later this year, is designed to produce around 1.0m litres of spirit annually of Indian whisky.

Beyond that, Ian Macleod were tight-lipped though my own lengthy on-line research turned up an Environmental Impact report from the Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board.  From that very comprehensive document we learn that “The project proposes to produce Malt Spirit, part of it matured for at least 2 years and above years for supplies to IMFL [that’s Indian-Made Foreign Liquor] industry for blending in various proportions and part of the matured malt spirit will be matured for more than 3 years to be called as Whisky under International norms and bottled as Indian Single Malt whisky for the Indian and export market”.   Indian Single Malt Whisky from Ian Macleod Distillers – that’s something not yet widely reported and quite a feather in the cap of relatively small independent Scottish distillers.

According to the report, the total cost is approximately £5m – quite the bargain by UK standards. 
Naturally I enquired as to the price of the mill and naturally, and quite correctly, Gareth Lee would not be drawn into the specifics. But he did hint that if you wanted one for your project you could expect to wait some 12 months or so (they’re busy) and expect to write a cheque for rather more than  £100,000.

So this is a mill that grinds slowly but is exceeding fine; evidently a labour of love and a source of great pride – and why not, because as Gareth assured me, “it will be working long after I’m in the ground.”  I wonder if in fifty or more years curious visitors will be regaled with the story – I certainly hope so.

House Targaryen, the only house in possession of fire breathing dragons, has proven its resilient nature throughout history. Through fierce determination and force of will, Daenerys Targaryen walked through fire and emerged at the head of the greatest army the known world has ever seen. Under the black and red banner of House Targaryen, she marches toward the Iron Throne and her rivals bend the knee to swear their allegiance to the Mother of Dragons.

Legally established in 1824 by John Cumming, as Cardow distillery, it’s been long suspected that distilling was carried out on this site since the early 1800s. The distillery was rebuilt in 1884, before the blending company of John Walker & Sons from Kilmarnock took an interest in the 1890s, as they went about acquiring stakes in various distilleries. In 1893, they purchased the distillery and Cardhu has been forever associated with the striding man.
The distillery itself has grown in tandem with the Johnnie Walker brand and changed its name to Cardhu in 1981 with a visitor centre also constructed just prior to the millennium. Most famously, in 2002, it launches a vatted single malt which comprises of malts from other Diageo distilleries. This isn’t well-received in some parts of the industry, in particular by rival competitor William Grant & Sons. Diageo eventually cancels the range in 2004 and since has focused on building the Cardhu single malt range, which enjoys staunch international support in countries such as Spain.

House of Tyrell of Highgarden rules over the Reach, the lush and fertile region of Westeros whose abundance feeds the realm. The Tyrell golden rose is beautiful but hides razor-sharp thorns beneath the surface. They have lived up to their house words of Growing Strong, defending their position of power with weapons of sharp words, sharp minds, and sharp actions. 
Like the Reach, Clynelish is positioned among green pastures and rolling hills, with scenic views of the North Sea. The fruity, waxy and sea-spicy flavours of this single malt are said to come from the water of Clynemilton burn, which runs over seams of gold in the rock. And while this vibrant, golden Scotch is light and floral, like House Tyrell, it's not to be underestimated with its underlying complex combination of Highland and maritime qualities.

One of the most stylish distilleries within the Diageo portfolio, Clynelish has long enjoyed favouritism amongst whisky enthusiasts. Its 14 year old expression is rightfully regarded as a classic with its distinctive waxy undertones. In recent times, Diageo has realised the potential of the distillery and upgraded the visitor centre in 2021 along with its first refurbishment and upgrade in 2017.
For too long, it has lived within the shadow of its illustrious neighbour, Brora, which has returned to production in 2021. Established in 1967, it has consistently supplied the Johnnie Walker brand, whilst enjoying the occasional special release. Recently, the distillery has added an exclusive release and the option to bottle your own. Underlining the fact that at last, we’ll be seeing much more of the whisky itself.

This Dalwhinnie Winter's Frost range is from a set of eight Limited Edition bottlings from Diageo which pays tribute to HBO's iconic TV Series, Games of Thrones.
The Stark Clan is known for its resiliency, strength, and ability to thrive under the most intense situations that are greatly shaped by Winterfell's frigid temperatures. Like House Stark, Dalwhinnie is made in one of the highest and coldest distilleries in Scotland, and its extreme conditions are responsible for shaping its signature honeyed sweetness and spicy warmth. Naturally, it's best served chilled or over ice.

If you take the A9 road through Scotland, eventually you will reach the heights of Dalwhinnie and its perfectly perched distillery. The name itself is Gaelic for ‘meeting place’ and historically would be a vital cog in trade flowing south and north. Founded in 1897 by a trio of owners, their new distillery is called Strathspey, before financial troubles prompt a change in ownership and the name that we know it by, today.
A visitor centre opened in 1991 and it remains a popular stopping off point with a well-stocked distillery shop. The buildings themselves are worth touring as the distillery is relatively unscathed apart from a fire in 1934 and worm tubs remain in use. Dalwhinnie also enjoys a very visible single malt presence thanks to its role in the Classic Malts series since 1987. Various special editions have been released since, but the main staple remains the 15 year old.

A Lagavulin that has been matured for 9 years and bottled by Diageo for the Game of Thrones series. Bottled at 46% ABV and presented in a tube that represents the House of Lannister.

An Islay giant, Lagavulin was established in 1816 by John Johnston and its early years were steady, without some of the drama seen by other distilleries. When the Mackie family took over in 1867, Lagavulin grew in reputation and respect. When the White Horse blend was launched in 1890, Lagavulin formed a major part of its recipe and is forever associated with the iconic whisky.
The move to a more corporate ownership began in 1927 with the Distillers Company Limited, leading to Diageo today. In an era of famous Islay names, arguably Lagavulin is only second to Bowmore and its value to Diageo is considerable. The current owners have slowly expanded the core range beyond the staple 16 year old and festival releases. Now, we have a variety of age statements and special editions. It’s no surprise that the distillery is working 7 days a week and producing as much whisky as it can to meet growing demand with the bulk of production shipped to the mainland for maturation, due to the limited warehousing on Islay.

This lot is a dark moody bottling to represent The Night's Watch, brought to you by Oban Distillery in a matching tube with the Night watch vows printed on the bottle and the tube.

Today’s distilleries are often located outside of towns, in Oban’s case, it was an early entry in the coastal town, which grew up around it. Dating back to 1794, the distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland. It faces the harbour and back into a hillside. Other distilleries have come and gone, land being sold to developers, but Oban, thankfully, remains.
A multitude of owners departed before DCL arrived on the scene, which was a forerunner of Diageo. The site received much-needed investment in 1968 and this took 4 years to complete, before supporting blends. The classic 14 year old single malt debuted in 1988 and in recent times a variety of special editions and distillery exclusives have appeared. Any whisky from Oban is scarce and production at the site is one of Diageo’s smallest with only 6 mashes per week.

Royal Lochnagar single malt has been aged for 12 years and is from a set of eight Limited Edition bottlings from Diageo which pays tribute to HBO's iconic TV Series, Games of Thrones. The Royal Lochnagar pays tribute to The House Of Baratheon, known for leading the rebellion against the Targaryen dynasty, Robert Baratheon took his seat upon the Iron Throne to rule over the Seven Kingdoms. Baratheon stag flew on banners above the Stormlands and King's Landing and golden antlered crowns signified absolute power. Over time, the Baratheon lords proved to be better warriors than rulers, and their house now lays in ruins.

Lochnagar was established in 1845 and received its Royal warrant only 3 years later. Named after a nearby mountain, there were predecessor distilleries in the area stretching back to the 1820s, but not on the same site. The distillery was retained by the Begg family until the hard times of the early 1900s, which forced the sale to John Dewar & Sons.

Despite some improvements and rebuilds, Lochnagar remains the smallest of the Diageo distilleries, in production terms. However, the distillery is valued by blenders and finds its way into blends such as the Johnnie Walker Blue Label and the export Windsor whisky. That doesn’t leave much time for the single malt market, with special editions occasionally being released or a distillery exclusive being bottled. There isn’t that much Lochnagar to go around which is unfortunate as it works so well with sherry casks thanks to the use of worm tubs, long fermentation and slow distillation.

This Singleton single malt is from a set of eight Limited Edition bottlings from Diageo which pays tribute to HBO's iconic TV Series, Games of Thrones.
Situated on the banks of the River FIddich in the wooded hills of Dufftown, Glendullan originally relied on the waters that surrounded it. Harnessing the force of the waters that flowed through the land, it utilised a water wheel to power the entire distillery. Best served with a splash of water, this Scotch has notes of green apple, honey, and sweet vanilla and finishes dry and clean.

Located on the outskirts of Dufftown, Glendullan is today owned by Diageo and produces for its blends and also the Singleton range. The distillery itself began life in 1897, however, the main date of interest is 1972 when a new distillery was constructed alongside the original. This was originally called Glendullan ‘B’ and it ran alongside the original distillery (which still stands) until 1985 when the older plan was mothballed and eventually closed for good.

The distillery isn’t open to visitors but you are able to walk by and around the original distillery, which does have a charming old style. Glendullan doesn’t have a huge following in the single malt market, the Singleton range is trying to change that with a variety of age statements including some well-aged single cask releases. It’s a very approachable style of whisky, easy-drinking without demanding too much of the drinker. Diageo seems intent on raising its profile in the coming years.

Talisker single Islay malt is from a set of eight Limited Edition bottlings from Diageo which pays tribute to HBO's iconic TV Series, Games of Thrones.
House Greyjoy rules the Iron Islands and worships the Drowned God. The Ironborn makes their home on bleak and blustery islands off the west coast of Westeros whose unforgiving, desolate location shapes their lives. Unable to subsist solely on rocky land, these reavers take to the sea to make their fortune amidst salt and smoke. They acquire their riches not with gold, but by paying the Iron Price.

Situated on the Isle of Skye, Talisker was established in 1830 although illicit distilling was commonplace in this remote location. For many years it was the only distillery on the island, but this has changed in recent times. It remains a classic example of an island whisky and has a staunch fanbase in spite of some variable releases in recent times.

As one of the Classic Malts from Diageo, its single malt presence is sizeable and with a recent rebrand and considerable investment in the site as a tourist attraction, we can expect even more Talisker. Featuring a strong maritime influence combined with peat, the distillery still uses worm tubs that are cooled by seawater. The site was the location of Scotland’s last great distillery fire in 1960, when a valve on the spirit still was not closed properly, prompting a massive rebuild that took 2 years.

This is the final installment of the limited edition bottlings from Diageo which pays tribute to HBO's iconic TV series, Game Of Thrones.
The three-eyed raven, a human who once lived among the Children of the Forest beyond the Wall, has the power to see beyond the constraints of time to uncover the past and present stories of Westeros and even reveal flashes of the future. As those stories unfold to impart wisdom and knowledge, they are intertwined and woven into the tapestry of the Six Kingdoms, all while beyond the horizon and above the clouds, the three-eyed raven watches with a thousand eyes, and one.
Mortlach, Dufftown's first legal distillery has equally been influenced by the people in its history. George and Alexander Cowie were integral influences for both the distillery and surrounding community, with George holding the esteemed title of Provost and Alexander developing Mortlach's signature method to distill the liquid exactly 2.81 times-a complex process as unique as the three-eyed rave itself. Evocative of the past and crafted for the future, this fifteen-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been finished in ex-bourbon casks, imparting a bold, smooth taste with notes of vanilla and spice befitting of those with a noble palate.

Fondly referred to as the Beast of Dufftown, Mortlach dates back to 1823 when it was founded by James Findlater. Like so many other owners of the period, he didn’t last too long and a variety of new owners came and went. The distillery was held back by periods of inaction and for a period in the 1850s was a brewery and a church. It was the arrival of the Cowie family that guided Mortlach into what we know it today, John Walker & Sons snapped it up in the 1920s before they were acquired by DCL. And it has remained with Diageo since.
The distillery is mostly known for its work with sherry casks and huge potential to be matured excessively with its savoury characteristics. Like Springbank, its complex distillation is unique and is part of its legacy. An assortment of stills and processes mean it is distilled 2.81 times. For much of its life, outside of support from Gordon & MacPhail, the distillery had a cult-like status. Diageo has tried in recent years to raise its single malt profile with various launches to mixed success.
