Glen Elgin 15 Years Old
The Manager's Dram 1988
Minor marks to label
A classy Speyside distillery, Glen Elgin has been shackled to demands from blenders for much of its existence when it is deserving of a more visible single malt presence. Originally founded in 1898 by William Simpson and James Carle, Glen Elgin arrived too late as the boom for whisky suddenly ended. When production does commence 2 years later, it only lasts for 5 months before the distillery falls silent again. Glen Elgin then trades hands 3 times over the next 30 years before arriving in the prosperous hands of Scottish Malt Distilleries, who immediately put it to work for the famous White Horse blend. The association gives the distillery the lifeline and prominence that it so desperately was seeking. Together the success of the White Horse brand ensures the distillery is expanded with its slow distillation and long fermentation regime proving a hit. You’ll find Glen Elgin as part of the Flora & Fauna range or an occasional official Special Release.
