    Yamazaki 18 Years Old Mizunara
    100th Anniversary Edition
    Lot #1370322

The House of Suntory is a House of Japanese artisans, crafting world-class spirits, inspired by Japanese nature and mastered with Japanese craft. The Yamazaki distillery is Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery established in 1923 by Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii. Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, Torii envisioned a Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to those of Scotland to create a unique kind of whisky. The Yamazaki Distillery is thus the birthplace of Japanese whisky. Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, this region was formerly referred to as "Minaseno", where one of the purest waters of Japan originates. Yamazaki is also home to Sen no Rikyu, Master of "The Way of Tea." Yamazaki Distillery is where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, providing a unique misty climate and one of Japan’s softest waters. The diversity of this region’s temperature and humidity creates ideal conditions for cask aging, known as the signature "Suntory Maturation". This Yamazaki Mizunara Single Malt is comprised of meticulously selected malt whiskies all aged for a minimum of 18 years in solely Mizunara casks, created in honour of Suntory Whisky's centenary. The result showcases the rare, distinctive beauty of Mizunara oak, which is considered the signature “enhancer” of Yamazaki, providing unique Japanese character and elegance.

    Yamazaki

Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torri, the seeds of Yamazaki were planted when he sent a worker, Masetaka Taketsura, to Scotland to learn the art of whisky distillation. His trip lasted 3 years before he returned and with Torri, selected the site of Yamazaki distillery. The first spirit flowed in 1924 and just a few years later, Torri changed the name of his company to Suntory, which remains in use today. Floor malting did exist at Yamazaki, but this ended in 1971 and has since relied on shipments of barley. The distillery has a unique assortment of stills, coming in all shapes and sizes. This allows a variety of whiskies to be produced, assisted by worm tubs, shell condensers and tube condensers. Production was increased further in 2013 with a $50 million investment, as demand has rocketed for Japanese whisky. Since then, Yamazaki, like so many Japanese distilleries, has suffered from a shortage of stock and has revamped its range to overcome this.
